Marines from Sierra Battery, Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 8th Marines prep and fire an M198 Medium Howitzer (Towed) at a close range target at Fort A.P. Hill Va., during a direct fire exercise. This is training that is nearly impossible to conduct at Camp Lejuene, N.C. due to space constraints but is easily accommodated here. The BLT is the ground combat element of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Marines of Alpha Co. are using there time on Ft. A.P. Hill to sharpen there fire and movement skills on the installation's abundant variety of courses it has to offer. . The Bravo Co., Marines are continuing the pre-deployment training regime by completing the 9-day course while here at Ft. A.P. Hill, Va. ::n::During the first days of the course the Marines learn the fundamentals of a raid and how to deal with the various aspects of conducting a raid. A CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter attached to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 365 practices at-sea landings aboard USS Iwo Jima. HMM-365 pilots are completing their required shipboard qualifications while participating in the Group Sail exercise.::n::HMM-365 is the Aviation Combat Element of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The 24th MEU is scheduled to deploy in the spring with the seven vessels of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group. The LSWAN gives Marines the capability to establish a wireless network in theater and set up Non-secure Internet Protocol Router (NIPR), Secure Internet Protocol Router (SIPR), and it works in conjunction with other logistics systems.
