Corporal Chris Bonney, a Marine with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, demonstrates entry control point techniques to a group of Iraqi Marines during a training session at the Umm Qasr Iraqi Naval Base on Oct. 12. Commander Gary Carr, 51, a Lansing Michigan native and oldest sailor in attendance cuts the cake with help from Hospitalman Ceazar Jaramillo, 20, a Ridgecrest, Calif. native, during the cake cutting portion of the Navy's 231st birthday ceremony aboard Camp Virginia, Kuwait. Michael Burtnick, a 22-year-old aviation ordnanceman with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 365 (Rein.), displays the tattoo that he designed himself as a memorial to New York City firefighters who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Burtnick, along with 19 other Marines and Sailors from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), spent 10 days in September supporting air operations over the skies of Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. - Lance Cpl. The training teaches the Marines how to successfully menuever over rocky and rough areas as well as how to move over mountains with the ability to still be able to fight.
