Sergeant Major Lanette N. Wright is a native of Boca Raton, Fla., and enlisted in the Marine Corps on March 6, 1989. Upon completion of recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., she reported to Communications Electronics School in Twentynine Palms, Calif., attaining her primary military occupational specialty of 2542 at the Telecommunication Center Operators Course. Upon graduation, she transferred to Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan, and served as a communications center operator.
In September 1990, Sgt. Maj. Wright was transferred to Data Communications Platoon, Communications Company, Headquarters & Service Battalion, 1st Force Service Support Group Camp Pendleton, Calif. During this tour she deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm as a CCO.
Afterwards, she deployed with Commander, Marine Forces Southwest Asia for a second tour to Desert Storm. For the remainder of her tour with 1st FSSG Forward, she deployed for Operation Native Fury in Doha, Kuwait and Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia, as the communications center chief where she was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant.
In September 1993, Sgt. Maj. Wright transferred to Commander, Marine Forces Atlantic in Norfolk, Va., where she served as a communication center watch supervisor. In support of the COMMARFORLANT and the Commanding General, II Marine Expeditionary Force migration she relocated to Camp Lejeune, N.C. and held various billets within the CG II MEF communications center.
In March 1996, Sgt. Maj. Wright attended Marine Security Guard School in Quantico, Va., and subsequently completed tours of duty as the Assistant Detachment Commander, American Embassy, Bridgetown, Barbados; and Assistant Detachment Commander, American Embassy, Hong Kong, China where she was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant. She also served as the Assistant Detachment Commander, American Embassy Tokyo, Japan and Detachment Commander, American Embassy, Canberra, Australia.
After successfully completing MSG duty in 1999, Sgt. Maj. Wright transferred to Marine Wing Control Group 48 in Great Lakes, Ill., and served as the Data Communications Chief, for Marine Wing Communications Squadron 48. During this tour she participated in numerous community events and participated in two annual training combined arms exercises with the reserves aboard MCAGCC Twentynine Palms until her promotion to Gunnery Sergeant in November 2001.
In April 2002, Sgt. Maj. Wright transferred to the Staff Noncommissioned Officer’s Academy, MCB Okinawa and served as a Career Course faculty instructor/advisor and as an Advanced Course faculty instructor/advisor until her selection to First Sergeant. In May 2004, Sgt. Maj. Wright transferred to Tenant Activities Company, H&S Battalion, MCB Quantico as the Company 1st Sgt., providing oversight of training and mentoring for Marines/Sailors assigned to Marine Corps Recruiting Command, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Marine Corps Systems Command, Network Operations and Security Center, and Joint Non Lethal Weapons Directorate.
In May 2007, Sgt. Maj. Wright transferred to 3rd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Maintenance Battalion Okinawa where she served as the Company 1st Sgt., for General Support Maintenance Company and was later assigned to H&S Company as the Company 1st Sgt.
In January 2008, Sgt. Maj. Wright posted as the Squadron Sgt. Maj. for Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265 (HMM-265) “Dragons”. During this tour she deployed with HMM-265 (REIN) as the Air Combat Element (ACE) Sgt. Maj., for two unit deployments with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
In September 2010, Sgt. Maj. Wright posted as the Sgt. Maj. for Combat Logistics Battalion 22, CLR 27, 2nd MLG, Camp Lejeune. In March 2011, she deployed as the Logistics Combat Element Sergeant Major for the 22nd MEU in support of Unified Protector and returned in February 2012.
In March 2012, Sgt. Maj. Wright posted as the Regimental Sgt. Maj. for CLR 27, 2nd MLG. In December 2012, she was reassigned to CLR 2 and deployed as the Logistics Combat Element (LCE) Sgt. Maj., II MEF (Forward) to Afghanistan. After the deployment, Sgt. Maj. Wright was assigned to the Command Inspector General office, 2nd MLG as the Senior Enlisted Advisor.
Sgt. Maj. Wright’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award.
