Amphibious assault vehicles (AAV) from 2nd Amphibious Assault Vehicle platoon, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, splash into the sea as they disembark from USS Ashland to Djibouti, Africa, March 22, where they will participate in a variety of training exercises. Marines from the 24th MEU are participating in a series of sustainment and bilateral training exercises alongside the French and Djiboutian militaries while in Djibouti. The 24th MEU is currently on a seven-month deployment aboard amphibious ships USS Nassau, USS Mesa Verde, and USS Ashland, which comprise the Nassau Amphibious Ready Group, and are currently serving as the theatre reserve force for Central Command.
