Flooding brought on by storm surge from Hurricane Katrina levied massive devastation on Staff Sgt. Edward J. Schneider's Slidell, La., home, overturning furniture, appliances, and even the island in middle of his kitchen. Schneider was getting help with recovery from Marines from 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. The battalion was in the area to assist with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
