24th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s forward-deployed satellite system provides communications backbone for crisis response

SIGONELLA, Italy (June 18, 2012) - Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit's communication detachment responsible for operating the Joint Task Force Enabler system volunteer at the Casa dell'Addolorata Institute in Giarre in Sigonella, Italy, during a community relations project June 18, 2012. The volunteers spent time refurbishing and cleaning the playground area and pool for the children after the area had been neglected for months. “We would like to thank our American friends for the generosity and contribution they have made to making our institute a better place to live and have fun for our children,” said Sister Teresina Fiumara. The Marines are responsible for operating a satellite communication system that allows the 24th MEU to set up multiple data networks throughout the world during their deployment to the European and Central Command theaters of operation. The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed in March with the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group to serve as a theater reserve and crisis response force in the 5th and 6th Fleet Areas of Responsibility.
