HMM-263 Harrier Detachment meets MiG 29's up close and personal: Photo Esssay

29 Sep 2002 | Gunnery Sgt. Mike Dougherty 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit

Upon arrival to the island of Sardinia, Italy, Marines of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 263's Harrier detachment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) had the unique opportunity to witness a remnant of the Cold War in the form of two MiG-29 fighter jets that conducted a brief visit to the air base here. The planes were flown by members of the German Luftwaffe, and were formerly the property of East Germany. One of the planes bears an elaborate paint scheme, designed to highlight its presence at European air shows. Pilots of the Harrier detachment were thrilled to see the legendary aircraft.
