HMM-263 Harrier Detachment attends bullfight during stay in Rota: Photo Essay

29 Sep 2002 | Gunnery Sgt. Mike Dougherty 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit

Marines of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 263's Harrier detachment traveled from Rota to Jerez, Spain, to broaden their cultural horizons by attending a bullfight here. The event featured some of the country's top matadors and gave them a unique glimpse into one of Spain's national pastimes. This particular bullfight incorporated matadors on horseback, supported by others on foot. Three headlining bullfighters, including the reigning regional champion, fought six bulls in succession. The mounted matadors provided a dazzling display of horsemanship, while the "ground troops" went face-to-face with the bulls -- impressing the Marines with their raw courage in the face of mortal danger.
